Innovative Isuzu Velocity Trucks Improve Pothole Repairs

Leading truck manufacturer Isuzu Truck UK has supplied two new 11 tonne Isuzu rigid trucks to road repair specialists Velocity, who needed a solution to help them tackle potholes and defects on the most constricted parts of the UK’s road network.

The Isuzu F110.210(E) rigid trucks are now in service with Velocity, initially deployed in Cornwall, providing a preventative and reactive maintenance programme for potholes across the county.

The specialist Velocity body fitted on the Isuzus has been designed and manufactured by Velocity at its manufacturing plant in Sunderland and this truck/body combination provides a short wheelbase and vehicle width that facilitates access to tight single-track lanes found in rural lanes, as well as making working in busy urban areas far easier.

According to Dominic Gardner, Velocity’s managing director, “These new trucks will open up new areas of the road network for Velocity to repair, providing a better service for road users and helping to keep communities connected. In some rural areas, narrow lanes are inaccessible for the larger machines in our fleet. Designed in collaboration with our customer, Cormac, these new machines allow us to access those roads and increase productivity.”

The Isuzu 11 tonne chassis provided Velocity with an increased chassis payload, compared to other machines, which enables an increase in material capacity, allowing up to 200 potholes a day to be tackled per vehicle.

Both Isuzu 11 tonne rigid vehicles were supplied to Velocity by their local Isuzu Truck dealer Thompson Commercials.

The Velocity road repair body fitted to the Isuzus was developed by the company as part of an innovative approach for quickly tackling thousands of defects, delivering permanent repairs to roads that cost a fraction of traditional patching techniques. The process takes just a couple of minutes, but the intensive layering process makes for a strong, durable repair without causing further damage to the road.

“The two new Isuzus deliver an increase in payload and increased reliability, together with easier operation and maintenance. This increased productivity comes from the combination of the Isuzu chassis with the specialist Velocity patching body that has been built based on many years of their road repair expertise. We are really pleased to have been involved in this exciting project with Velocity as it provides an innovative way of dealing with a major issue that is affecting most councils across the country,” said Jon Corcoran, fleet sales manager, Isuzu Truck UK.
